A workshop on International Refugee Law and the ways of media to reflect refugee cases , was presented to journalists and reporters in the Cyprus Turkish Journalist Union office on 10 July 2008 with the Turkish Cypriot Human Rights Foundation (TCHRF). A workshop on International Refugee Law and the ways of media to reflect refugee cases , was presented to journalists and reporters in the Cyprus Turkish Journalist Union office on 10 July 2008 with the Turkish Cypriot Human Rights Foundation (TCHRF). The chairperson of the TCHRF board of trustees and lawyer Ms. Emine Erk, stated that the foundation follows news about refugees in the media and has regularly observed serious problems in reporting about this topic. Ms. Emilia Strovlidou, from the UNHCR External Affairs Office in Cyprus, provided information about the work of UNHCR in Cyprus.  Mr. Metin Çorabatır, representing the UNHCR Public Affairs Department in Ankara, informed the journalists about the right to asylum, status of the refugees in the range of international law and adequate terminology while stating that media has an important role to play in combating prejudices against refugees. He also advised the media on how to report on refugee issues. The workshop included an interactive part where journalists were intervening by questioning the trainer on matters of their concern.
